See how Bharatanatyam is used for contemporary expression through this showcase by participants of the IPAC Residency programme.

AMMA by Varsha Vishwanath

As children, we grow up hearing stories of heroic mothers, who love unconditionally, are self-sacrificial, ever-understanding, strong and almost undefeatable. These tales influence us and we see our mothers as superheroes, without a fault—almost God-like. Only as we grow older do we realise that mothers are humans like us, with their own identities, fears and insecurities. Why do we place them on a pedestal, burdening them with our expectations?

Using Bharathanatyam as a tool of expression, Amma explores the dynamics of a daughter-mother relationship and the emotions of a daughter as she tries to understand her mother, to seek comfort in her embrace once again.

Shivam: Form to Formless by Dr Nidya Shanthini Manokara

Follow a dancer's journey through the scientific, artistic, individual and universal aspects of the Natarajah symbol, the iconic Lord of Dance, which represents the essence of all energy in the Universe. He is always in motion and crystalises the form and movement aesthetics of Bharatanatyam. He allows for multiple narratives including divine perspectives, allowing a dancer to have a personal and intimate relationship with the form. He embraces and leads humanity towards auspiciousness, that which can be defined in one's own terms. Shivam: Form to Formless is an invitation to wander through these aspects of the Cosmic Dancer.
