Unspoken Melodies – Silent Film Classics in Concert 《默然有声》音乐会Organised by: Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Performed by: Singapore Chinese Orchestra
Silent films are always accompanied by lush Western orchestral music, and endearing classics by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are still adored and enjoyed by many today.
What if these films are now accompanied by Chinese orchestral instrumentation, with the unique timbre of erhu that adds on to the layers and sophistication of emotions, and the pounding percussion that creates the dramatic effect? How will this rejuvenate a Western classic and bring forth new life?
Led by Music Director Tsung Yeh, come experience classic silent films as you have never before, with original music specially composed and arranged by Cultural Medallion winner Law Wai Lun, and Hong Kong musical talent Lincoln Lo.
From surviving in a lion pit during ancient Rome, to a love story between a poor violinist and a lady, to an escaped prisoner creating comic mayhem and havoc, and the story of scientist Frankenstein's monstrous creation, rediscover the cinematic beauty of these silent film classics through original music performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. This concert is brought to you by the artistic team behind the wildly successful silent film concert of Ruan Lingyu's The Goddess in Huayi 2014.
The concert takes the audience on a music rollercoaster with the screening of four classic silent film excerpts, including The Adventurer and The Vagabond starring the iconic Charlie Chaplin; silent film pioneer Buster Keaton in the comedic segment Rome from Three Ages, as well as the original 1910 film Frankenstein.
Co-produced by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
