Synopsis:

Curated by Syed Muhammad Hafiz, this exhibition features the works of the late Singaporean artist, Jaafar Latiff, who was known for his relentless experimentation with colours and the batik medium. He was best remembered for his abstract expressionist paintings, culminating in a large-scale work titled Sea Port of Singapore, currently on permanent display at the Bras Basah MRT station. A self-taught artist, Jaafar also played a significant role in the art education scene here having taught at various art institutions from 1965 until the 2000s.

This exhibition traces Jaafar's artistic evolution from his pre-abstraction days to even a cursory engagement with early computer technology in the nineties. An important component of this exhibition also includes working with artwork conservators and family estates – issues that contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of local art. Ultimately this exhibition is a testament to one of Singapore's pioneering modern artists whose works and legacy encourage us to go beyond our comfort zones in the quest for artistic excellence. Supported by RHT Rajan Menon Foundation.
