Synopsis:

Birds are synonymous with movement and symbols of life, freedom and nature. This installation explores the passing of time through the flight of birds. A series of sculptures glide and soar as they wind their way through the Community Wall space. The birds are captured in various stages of flight, engaging with the lighting and spatial conditions of the site. The choice of wire as a medium—a distinctive feature of Tan's practice—allows him to create a palpable sense of lightness and movement in these sculptures. The coda to this flock's spirited and rhythmic sojourn arrives in a moment of ebullience: a bird swooping in and landing on a child's outstretched hand.

About the artist
The sculptures of Victor Tan (b.1969, Singapore) are distinctive in his use of stainless-steel wires that he coils, weaves and layers into three-dimensional sculptural figures. Usually taking the form of human and birds, Tan investigates existential ideas about humanity, emotions, and the passages of time and life through his sculptures. Tan has presented his works in exhibitions at Esplanade (2011, 2006) and Singapore Art Museum (2002, 1999). His commissioned sculptures are located in various public spaces across Singapore.
