Synopsis:

Join Moonbeam Children's Book Award-winning authors Eva Wong Nava and Chan Wei Teng, as they discuss the conceptualisation of their protagonist's voice in "Open: A Boy's Wayang Adventure" and "Murphy, See How You Shine!", and everything they learnt along their writing journey on writing for children.

"Open: A Boy's Wayang Adventure" tells the story of Open, a ten-year-old boy on the autism spectrum with a great love for monkeys. See the world through his eyes as he discovers the joy of friendship and the Chinese performing art, Wayang.

"Murphy, See How You Shine!" follows Murphy, a special assistance dog who learns about how one's difference can make the world a brighter place.

Eva and Wei Teng will also be sharing their writing process, the intricacies of writing stories of persons with special needs, and how to be mindful of the language and production for the appropriate age group.

"Open: A Boy's Wayang Adventure" is the winner of the 2018 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards bronze medal for General Fiction, and "Murphy, See How You Shine!" is the winner of the 2018 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards gold medal for e-book.

About the speakers:

Eva Wong Nava - Author lives between two worlds. She reads copiously and writes voraciously. She holds a degree in English Literature and Language from the University of Hull where Philip Larkin was once the University Librarian (and the reason why she chose to study there!); a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from University College London where the Institute of Education resides, and a certificate in Art Writing which she undertook to better understand what the craft entails. She holds a M.A. in Art History and has taught children and adults how they can use writing for communication and play. She is the founder of CarpeArte Journal, an online space, which publishes works of fiction. Eva's flash fiction have appeared in various places and her writing on art have been published in international art journals.

Chan Wei Teng is an educator based in Singapore. Formerly an educational therapist with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS), she is currently teaching at NorthLight School. She works with teenagers with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and who often come from challenging or disadvantaged family backgrounds.

When not traversing the corners of the earth to embrace new experiences, she can be found at home strumming her ukulele or taking nature walks. She hopes the inspirations she draws from around her help her be a better teacher and writer. "Murphy, See How You Shine!" is Wei Teng's first children's picture book.
