Synopsis:

Since the 1980s, the Bras Basah and Bugis areas have undergone extensive urban regeneration, from the conservation of shophouses, the expansion of arts institutions and spaces, the influx of lifestyle options, to the addition of education spaces. Today, the area has been officially designated as Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) – Singapore's arts, heritage and design precinct.

In an area where the only constant is change, what and who comes to mind when you think of the BBB Precinct? What transforms a space into a place? What roles do the arts and culture play in fostering a sense of place and connection to this precinct? Are the constant urban (re)developments place management or placemaking?

Join us on 8 November for a showcase of 6 unique proposals on how we may rethink the connections between people and place through the development of a cultural icon for the BBB Precinct.

Through a pitching session and poster exhibition, students from SMU's "Arts, Culture and the Global City" module will share their concepts for a future cultural icon for the BBB precinct. The concept of a "cultural icon" is used as a guiding framework to unearth fresh perspectives on the needs, gaps, challenges and opportunities facing the place management of BBB as an arts, heritage and design precinct. Each cultural icon will also reflect a particular group of stakeholders' sense of place within, and collective cultural anxieties/connections towards, the precinct.

RSVP now for yet another thought-provoking evening of conversation on the potential of places for people in Singapore's rapidly changing city-scape!

Schedule:
6.30pm - Doors Open for Poster Exhibition & Refreshments (Level 2)
7.30pm - Start of Student Pitching Sessions (Gallery Theatre, Basement)
