Synopsis:

China has a vibrant and long history in the culture of sound. This lecture introduces the basic form and content of traditional sound culture from the perspective of science. Sound culture is largely made up of yinlü (law in speech sound), gelü (rhyming), qulü (melody) and yuelü (music). For this lecture, yinlü introduces the phonetic basis of Chinese language; gelü introduces the recitation of classical poetry in different dialects; qulü introduces the pronunciation of Chinese opera, sounds produced by ethnic minorities' musical instruments etc.; and yuelü focuses on the eight tones of traditional Chinese music while introducing the traditional instruments of bianzhong, guqing, guqin etc.
