Synopsis:

The fourth installation of Visions art series features works by multi-disciplinary artist Chng Seok Tin and contemporary ceramics artist Nelson Lim Sang Choon.

We are intimately connected to our natural environment and it affects us physically, spiritually and psychologically, forming and determining some of our human characteristics.

On the other hand, human activities constantly impact the physical environment surrounding us, changing them in ways both good and bad, generating social dilemmas along the way for the present and future society.

The creative works of Seok Tin and Nelson are testimonies to their struggles to overcome personal and physical limitations. In their journey searching for answers and overcoming adversities, they found endless possibilities for their creative expressions which often extend beyond mere observations and physicality of the matter.

For Seok Tin who lost most of her eyesight 3 decades ago, issues of identity, trauma and self-definition come into play. Her dark works reflect the desire to rise above the reality that she is living in, be it physical or psychological.

For Nelson, the relationship between mechanical reproduction and the handmade craft in the production of ceramics interests him. His experiments to fuse metal and clay, a modern material with an ancient one, led him to contemplate on a series of questions regarding displacement and integration within his practice. For a potter who values the traditional handicraft of ceramics, his towering cage-like structure is an embodiment of his anxieties and dilemma for the future of this ancient art form.
