Synopsis:

Sometimes, It Takes Blood: Embodying Idea Into Exhibition

How does a curator translate an idea into a museum exhibition?

Join Joyce Toh, Curatorial Co-Head at the Singapore Art Museum, as she shares her experience curating, "5 Stars: Art Reflects on Peace, Justice, Equality, Democracy and Progress", a major exhibition during SG50 that invited artists to critically reflect on the nation's values, represented by the five stars on the Singapore flag.

This session aims to give a glimpse into the intricacies of exhibition-making, from ways of conceptualising a show, to commissioning artists and managing gallery spaces.

To encourage free and frank exchange, this session will be held under the Chatham House Rule.

About the Speaker
Joyce Toh is Co-Head of the Curatorial team at Singapore Art Museum, where she also oversees the Philippines collection. Her past exhibitions include "Medium at Large", "Sensorium 360", and "Thrice Upon A Time: A Century of Story in the Art of the Philippines". Joyce was a curator in the Singapore Biennale 2016 and 2013, and part of the organising team that conceptualised the themes and frameworks for both editions. She holds a MA in Aesthetics from University of York, U.K. and a BA in Art History from Syracuse University, U.S.A.
