The Vault: My Grandfather's Road
Written and directed by Neo Kim Seng
Audition Date: 10 & 11 June 2017
My Grandfather's Road was commissioned by Cake Theatrical Productions for Running With Strippers, its 10th Anniversary celebration at Cake Studios at Goodman Arts Centre in November 2015.
My Grandfather's Road is a recollection by the writer of his family's histories and growing up in Singapore in the 70s. The writer lived, up to 1973, in the house built by his paternal grandfather on the road named after his paternal grandfather.
My Grandfather's Road is not a nostalgia trip but about renewing relationships with one's past and present. It is written as fragments of memories, reflections, possibilities and also culled from visual information from old family photographs.
My Grandfather's Road was first presented in 2015 as an English monologue in the form of a guided tour of the photo-installation of the writer's family photographs. For the presentation in November 2017, My Grandfather's Road will be performed in Cantonese – the dialect of the writer's mother to explore further possibilities and memories in a different sound. The 2017 version is presented by Centre 42's The Vault programme, a series that revisits and remembers Singapore works, and aims to refresh them and retell them.
The presentation is seeking performers who can speak Cantonese. The monologue will last about 30 minutes. Performance experience is not required. If necessary, Cantonese lessons will be conducted for selected performers who are not fluent Cantonese speakers. For the audition, applicants will be required to prepare a short monologue.
Interested applicants please email firstname.lastname@example.org by 2 June 2017 and include information about yourself, a recent photo and a resume if applicable. Applicants will also be given more details about the presentation.
