Synopsis:

Award-winning poet Cole Swensen has published 15 books which respond to, or incorporate elements of works of visual art, whether it's French baroque gardens or landscapes seen from train windows. This masterclass will explore a series of revisionary processes, and reveal ways in which one can achieve poetic transformation by repeated encounters with a work, or works, of art.

Cole Swensen (www.coleswensen.com) is the author of 15 collections of poetry, most recently, Gravesend and Landscapes on a Train. She has won the Iowa Poetry Prize, the New American Writing Award, and the National Poetry Series and has been a finalist for the National Book Award and twice for the Los Angeles Times Book Award. A 2007 Guggenheim Fellow, she co-edited the 2009 Norton anthology, American Hybrid and founded a small press, La Presse. She was awarded the 2004 PEN USA Award in Literary Translation. After 10 years on the faculty of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she has recently moved to Brown University, where she is the chair of the Literary Arts Department. She divides her time between Paris and Providence, R.I., USA.
