"[Stan Lai is] the best Chinese-language playwright and director in the world." BBC

"Lai's most famous work Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land may be the most popular contemporary play in China." – The New York Times

A beloved modern classic that holds a special place in hearts around the world.

Making its Singapore debut at Esplanade 10 years ago, Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land by celebrated Taiwanese playwright and theatre director Stan Lai and Performance Workshop returns to Huayi.

Two theatre groups are mistakenly booked into the same space for rehearsals. One rehearses the poignant play Secret Love which tells of a couple separated by the revolution, while the other runs through the farcical period comedy Peach Blossom Land. As the two groups struggle for control of the stage, resulting in chaos and numerous comic squabbles, their contrasting worlds begin to come together, creating surprising new layers of meaning that are arrestingly moving and universally felt.

Regarded as a masterwork of contemporary Chinese theatre, Performance Workshop's special 30th-anniversary production of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land is directed by award-winning theatre director and filmmaker Ismene Ting and features a stellar cast that includes Golden Bell Award winners and popular Taiwanese television and stage personalities.
