This July and August, build up your skills from anywhere around the world with workshops in voice and devised theatre, led by faculty members Simon Stollery and Koh Wan Ching.

1. Voice into Acting with Simon Stollery

Date: 17 & 24 July
Time: 10:00am - 12:30pm (SGT, UTC +8)
Venue: Zoom
Fees: S$100
Participants: 10 max

The voice is of paramount importance to the actor, whose primary responsibility is that of the storyteller. Learn how to use your voice in a way that is commanding, expressive and engaging, and to apply this to enrich the process of acting.

Session 1 (17 July)
Participants will be introduced to a variety of practical text-based exercises to achieve clear and engaging voice use, learning to avoid traps actors can fall into in the process, as well as techniques for extending range, flexibility and dexterity. This will then be applied to a dramatic text to achieve clarity, range and specificity within the text.

Session 2 (24 July)
Beginning with a practical recap of the previous session's work, the focus will turn to enhancing the acting process through the application of voice. This will include using vocal technique to add precision, variety and versatility to the playing of the actor's actions. Texts will be provided in advance so that participants can familiarise themselves with them prior to the workshop.

About the instructor
Simon Stollery is a Voice teacher at ITI. He has more than 20 years of experience in actor training, specialising in Voice, Speech and Singing work. He has also worked as a Voice & Dialect Coach in professional theatre and film, and is a certified Estill Master Trainer.

2. Devising for Devising — A Workshop and Laboratory with Koh Wan Ching

Date: 7 & 14 August
Time: 10:00am - 12:30pm (SGT, UTC +8)
Venue: Zoom
Fees: S$100
Participants: 8 max

So many things can spark inspiration — a good book, a passing thought, a moving experience. It is taking these ideas and moulding them into a cohesive performance piece that leaves some actors at an impasse.

In this workshop, participants will be invited to bring original works to life through bridging together material that inspires them with devising methods. They will be guided to come up with different ways to engage with their material. The focus of the workshop will be for them to develop and incorporate their own concepts and ideas into tangible performance pieces.

Participants will be expected to bring source materials, develop devising strategies through group discussions, as well as create work that will be filmed and circulated amongst each other for feedback.

About the instructor
Wan Ching is a performer, theatre-maker, and acting teacher. She has trained with SITI Company as well as the Suzuki Company of Toga, and is a graduate of the inaugural SITI Conservatory Program for international theatre artists. Wan Ching has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Theatre Studies from the National University of Singapore.
