Synopsis:

Prevailing systems of power often seem immutable and resistant to change. It is after all in the interest of those in power to maintain the status quo. As a result, we often express doubt that anyone working within or with the system can effectively ignite change from within.

Yet countless good people in these institutions do step up to push for positive change—be it in terms of social equality, rights for the marginalised, or greater sustainability.

What drives them to continue struggling within the behemoth-like structure? How do they cope with barriers, disappointment and exhaustion—and how do they continue to bear hope for the future?

As part of Fringe 2021: Quiet Riot, we invite you to hear from these individuals who are, in their own way, 'rioting' from within. Through this open conversation, we hope to dismantle the notion of an 'us-vs-them' polarisation, and instead, despite different approaches, realise we are all allies in this broader struggle for a fairer and more just world.

Panellists:
Carrie Tan (Founder and Strategic Advisor, Daughters Of Tomorrow)
Izzaty Ishak (Lead Artist and Community Worker, Beyond Social Services)
Thenuga Vijakumar (President, Cat Welfare Society)
with facilitator Shiao-Yin Kuik (Director and Co-Founder, The Thought Collective, and former NMP)
